A fruit hedge is an innovative and edible form of hedge inspired by the natural forest edge. Where a traditional forest offers little edible value and a monoculture plantation produces much but little sustainably, the fruit hedge combines the best of both worlds: high biodiversity and a good yield. It consists of several layers - from fruit trees and berry bushes to herbs, climbers and ground covers - and thus creates a lively, self-regulating ecosystem.

Unlike classical food forests, which are often difficult to access, a fruit hedge is laid out in straight lines. This makes maintenance and harvesting much more practical, without disturbing the ecological balance. The intervening beds are used for a crop rotation of vegetables and cereals, making the system not only ecologically but also economically viable. This form of woodland farming, also known as 'alley cropping', ensures a continuous harvest from spring to winter.

So a fruit hedge is not just a row of fruit trees, but a cleverly designed system in which nature, food production and human management come together harmoniously.
